MEPs have voted to raise the indicative targets for the amount of energy to be saved by member states through energy services and efficiency measures. On 24 November the European Parliament's Committee on Industry, Research and Energy voted by a strong majority to adopt a controversial second reading report by Mechtild Rothe (Germany -Socialist) on the proposed EU directive on energy end-use efficiency and energy services. While the Council had called for an overall target of 6% to be reached six years after the directive enters into force, the Committee repeated its first reading demand that member states be required to save 11.5% after nine years.
