Commission strengthens rules against maritime pollution

The Commission has tabled, on 11 March, a revised version of a directive enforcing sanctions in cases of maritime pollution. The new proposal, to replace a framework decision dating from 2005, clarifies the existing legislation and ensures that serious infringements are sanctioned by criminal penalties. "The new directive is an important complement to the Directive on the protection of the environment through criminal law on which we will hopefully reach agreement soon with the Council and the European Parliament.
