The European Parliament on Wednesday (25 April) cleared the latest batch of laws designed to prevent accidents at sea polluting coastlines and endangering life and follow the Erika and Prestige shipping disasters. Earlier Erika laws in the first and second packages went some way to curbing accidents and the resulting pollution, but the third package goes further with additional measures to prevent accidents and pollution and to deal with the aftermath of accidents.
