EU PET bottle collection up 11 per cent

The European post-sorting PET bottle collection reached 1.26 million tonnes in 2008, a jump of more than 11 per cent compared with the year before, the European PET organisation Petcore announced last week.rnAccording to the organisation, the overall collection rate rose by nearly 5 per cent, from 41 to 46 per cent of all PET bottles on the market.rn"Of the collected bales that were reprocessed in Europe, only 75 per cent was usable PET. The remainder consisted of caps and labels, residues and other contamination such as foreign materials and other polymers. The continuing programme of lightweighting means that the caps and labels form a greater proportion by weight of the whole PET package," Petcore said on 23 October.
