European PET bottle collection almost 50 per cent in 2009

Some 1.4 million tonnes or 48.4 per cent of PET plastic bottles were collected for recycling in Europe last year, a more than 8 per cent increase on 2008, according to figures released by the PET bottle trade association Petcore (PET containers recycling Europe) last Sunday.rnPET collection has risen significantly since 2004, the organisation said. Petcore estimates meanwhile that with a total mechanical reclamation capacity of 1.6 million tonnes, industry should be able to increase the collection rate to more than 50 per cent.
