MEPs call for implementation report on biodiversity

The European Parliament Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety has asked DG Presidency (the main Parliament body that deals with decisions on workload) to draft an implementation report on the implementation of major EU legislation with a bearing on the conservation of biodiversity, it was revealed at the committee's co-ordinators' last meeting. Implementation is a focus for the Parliament and the European Commission, who is now actively looking at ways to improve implementation of waste legislation (see stories this week and last week's issues). MEPs feel, owing to the apparent failure of the EU Action Plan aimed at halting the loss of biodiversity by 2010 (1), that such a report is urgently needed.
