Irish farm waste grants under threat

State funds needed to pay grants for Ireland's farm waste management scheme, to ensure compliance with the EU nitrates directive, may be cut as the government faces a massive reduction in its tax revenues due to the recession.rnThere was a surge of applications for the scheme in the final few days before the 31 December deadline. Up to 17,000 farmers are reported to have applied for these grants, but the minister for finance has indicated that he will not make up the budget shortfall of up to €400 million.
