While Ireland may comprise just one main land mass the island represents two very different territories, with different laws governing various aspects of business and the community. Waste is one area where this is the case, with the six counties of Antrim, Armagh, Londonderry, Down, Fermanagh and Tyrone falling under the jurisdiction of UK law with regard to a whole host of areas, including recycling and landfill diversion targets. Border controls are not overly stringent between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, and arisings from either of the two states has the potential to pass backwards and forwards with a minimum of trouble. But the flip side is that it could lead to waste originating in the Republic of Ireland finding its way into the UK waste stream. This could distort landfill and recycling targets for both countries as well as creating a shortage of Northern Ireland landfill capacity and hindering recycling drives in the Republic.
