Two Gm Maize Varieties Proposed For Cultivation

The European Commission on 21 January proposed that member states approve two GMO products for European cultivation, opening up the possibility of new GM crop production in the EU for the first time in ten years. Industry and environmental groups confirmed that two genetically modified maize crops - 'Bt-11 maize' (Syngenta) and '1507 maize' (Pioneer Hi-Bred and Dow AgroSciences) - are being submitted by the Commission to member state experts. In February a regulatory committee made up of member state biotech experts will vote on whether the GMOs can be cultivated in Europe. If authorised, it would mark the first time since 1998 that a GMO for cultivation has received authorisation from EU member states - and would end the 10 year de facto 'moratorium' the EU is seen to have operated.
