Introduction and Cultivation of Two Varieties of Proso Millet: Ningmi-10 and Ningming-11 in Baicheng District of Jilin Province

According to the present problems of variety deterioration and low yield of proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) in Baicheng District of Jilin Province. Northeast China, two high quality varieties, Ningmi10 and Ningming-11 introduced from Guyuan District of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Northwest China, were cultivated in order to enrich the gene pool and increase diversity of this kind of crop. Order arrangement was utilized as field experiment, in which the yield-related traits and growth stages of two experimental cultivars Ningmi-10 and Ningming-11 were compared with that of the local variety Gimi-1 used as regional check cultivar. Compared with their own inherent characters, the plant length of the two cultivars became higher, the effective tiller number and thousand-kernel weight increased and the growth period prolonged during the growth of their introducing cultivation in Baicheng. According to the comparison of the two experimental cultivars with regional check cultivar, Gimi-1, all of values of the yield-related traits of the former on plant length, panicle length, panicle neck length, effective tiller number, grain number per panicle, grain weight per panicle and thousand-kernel weight, were higher than those of the latter. The average yield of the two experimental cultivars Ningmi-10, Ningmi-11, was 2290 kg/hm2 and 2530 kg/hm2 respectively, significantly higher than that of regional check cultivar Gimi-1, 1875 kg/hm2. The successful experience in the introduction and cultivation of the two cultivars, which are of great practical importance and feasibility, can be helpful for plant breeding, cultivation, introduction and use of new germplasm resources of proso millet in Baicheng District.
