US-based retailer Walmart has announced the launch of a new global commitment to sustainable agriculture, aimed at supporting small and medium sized farmers and increasing sales of local produce.rnIt will also more closely monitor its suppliers' use of water, energy and fertiliser, and improve its practices in relation to purchasing of palm oil and beef.rnThe new strategy was formulated in consultation with a number of the company's suppliers, plus universities, and non-government organisations including the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF), Conservation International and the Rainforest Alliance.
