Dalli rejects single use-by date to cut food waste

European Health Commissioner John Dalli has rejected calls to cut food waste by having a single date stamp on labels saying the separate "use by" and "best before" dates have different meanings.rnBritish Liberal MEP Chris Davies had written to Dalli asking whether the EU should consider dropping the two - three in the UK - date labels in favour of a single "use by" date. Davies pointed to a recent study from WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) suggesting that the 8.3 million tonnes of food discarded annually in the UK could be much reduced if "sell by", "display until" and "best before" labels were replaced with a uniform "use by" label, and that this could save the average family in the UK up to ￡610 per annum.
