MEPs have adopted a code of conduct setting out rules and principles for their contacts with outside interests so as to avoid conflicts of interest. The code, adopted by 619 votes in favour, two against and six abstentions in a 1 December plenary vote in Brussels, follows the cash-for-amendments scandal that rocked the European Parliament earlier this year. Unsurprisingly, the code contains an explicit ban on receiving payments or other rewards in exchange for influencing parliamentary decisions.
