In the last full week before the European Parliament elections, a group of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) campaigning for transparency in the EU hit out at the failure to enforce ethics rules in an MEP code of conduct during the last term. In a joint statement flagging up their newly released briefing paper, Friends of the Earth Europe, Corporate Europe Observatory and LobbyControl warned that "Three years after the cash-for-amendments scandal, the lack of enforcement of the European Parliament ethics rules leaves the integrity and the credibility of the Parliament at risk." The cash-for-amendments scandal revealed MEPs taking money to file amendments to contentious legislation.
