Health Commissioner John Dalli has revealed that an average 179kg of food per European citizen is wasted every year - around 89 million tonnes for the EU as a whole - "of which a significant part is avoidable". Dalli unveiled the shocking figures in response to a written question from Greek Christian Democrat MEP Konstantinos Poupakis. Dalli also noted that the European Commission is to fund an additional study under the Seventh Framework Research Programme to better quantify the food wasted along the food chain.
