Transparency campaign group the Alliance for Lobbying Transparency and Ethics Regulation (ALTER EU) also argued that the scandal exposed the need for stricter ethics rules and a mandatory lobby register. In a 21 March statement ALTER-EU said that the European Parliament's rules governing transparency, ethics, conflicts of interest and relations with lobbyists "are currently far too lax and offer little protection against unscrupulous behaviour."
