European Health Commissioner John Dalli has urged MEPs to back European Commission proposals to provide as much flexibility to member states on growing GM (genetically modified) crops as they have with organic or conventional cultivation. Addressing a European Parliament hearing convened by the centre right political group the European People's Party on 1 March, Dalli emphasised the need to "cater for situations where member states want to have a choice not to cultivate".
