European Health Commissioner John Dalli urged the European Parliament last week to rally behind European Commission proposals to provide as much flexibility to member-states on growing biotech crops as they have with organic or conventional cultivation. Addressing a hearing convened by Parliament's center-right European Peoples Party on March 2, Dalli underscored the need to "cater for situations where member-states want to have a 'choice not to cultivate'.
