EEA: EU to meet Kyoto targets despite increase in emissions

EU countries are on track to meeting their emissions reduction targets under the Kyoto Protocol, despite greenhouse gas emissions increases in 2010. According to the latest report from the European Environment Agency (EEA), this is in part due to a continued strong growth in renewable energy sources. The report, released on 30 May, shows that emissions of CO-2 and other gases increased by 2.4 per cent, "as a result of both economic recovery in many countries after the 2009 recession and a colder winter."
