EU will exceed Kyoto target-EEA

The EU is "closing in" on its greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction target set under the Kyoto protocol, according to research published on 24 October by the European Environment Agency (EEA). The 15 EU member states with a common commitment under the Kyoto protocol are on track to exceed their collective 8pc Kyoto reduction target for 2008-12 by around 210mn t/yr CO2 equivalent (CO2e), the EEA says. It expects the surplus to come from a 71.5mn t/yr CO2e reduction in 2008-11 in EU-15 GHG emissions not covered by the EU emissions trading scheme (ETS), combined with a further 84mn t/yr CO2e generated from international carbon credits and a 58mn t/yr CO2e reduction as a result of contributions from carbon sinks.
