US: Styrene firms seek judgment in carcinogen controversy

Competing interests fired off legal salvos earlier this month in the legal fight over the National Toxicology Program's (NTP) listing of styrene as a chemical "reasonably anticipated" to be a human carcinogen. The styrene industry, which has sued to reverse the listing, filed a motion for summary judgment in the US District Court for the District of Columbia on 18 May - the same day the Environmental Defence Fund (EDF) and United Steelworkers filed a motion to intervene in the case in a bid to help the government defend NTP's decision to list styrene in its 2011 "Report on Carcinogens."
