UK: Call to increase bottle recycling rate to 70 per cent

Although the UK is making much progress in plastics recycling - with recycling the yoghurt pot seen as a "breakthrough" (see last week's EE&PL, p6-8) - much more is needed if the country will meet the requirements of plastic bottle reprocessors, Recoup (the Recycling of Used Plastics) has said. These reprocessors will need as much as 480,000 tonnes of waste bottles a year for their recycling operations by 2017; it said in its "2011 UK Household Plastics Packaging Collection Survey". This means that the bottle recycling rate must increase from 48.5 per cent (2010) to 70 per cent.
