MEPs back Commission over ETS

The European Commission received broad support from MEPs on the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety last week when they discussed the inclusion of aviation in the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). The majority of MEPs agreed that "a law is a law" and that since the ETS had been finalised in 2008, third countries could not now feign surprise and shock. "In 1997 ICAO [International Civil Aviation Organisation] was tasked to do something internationally about the greenhouse gas emissions from aviation, they did not do anything. Now it is time to stop free-riding," Finnish Green MEP Satu Hassi said.
