MEPs to grill Commission and Council on aviation and ETS

MEPs are this week to question European Commission officials as well as the Greek Environment and Climate Minister, the current holder of the EU Council presidency, on what is happening with the stop-the-clock mechanism when it comes to aviation's inclusion in the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). Finnish Green MEP Satu Hassi has drawn up the questions which the Commission and Yannis Maniatis will be expected to answer on 23 January at the European Parliament's Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee. The question, on the 'State of implementation and enforcement by the member states of the ETS Stop the Clock legislation', explains that the ETS Stop the Clock legislation giving a temporary waiver to aviation from the provisions of the 2003 ETS directive (2003/87/EC) was proposed by the Commission and "swiftly adopted" by Parliament and Council by April 2013 "in order to sustain the momentum created at the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) for the adoption of a global market based measure (MBM) to tackle emissions from international aviation."
