Commission takes Hungary to task over waste

The European Commission launched, on 21 November, an infringement procedure against Hungary over alleged waste management failings. The case concerns a red sludge reservoir in Almasfuzito, in the northwest part of the country, where Hungary is accused of violating directives on waste management and on the protection of natural habitats. Environmental campaigners Greenpeace contacted the Commission and requested environmental checks after reports of high arsenic concentrations in the soil near the reservoir.
