France's waste prevention plan lacks ambition, critics say

The French government is putting the final touches to its waste prevention plan 2014-2020 as required by the EU's waste framework directive. The plan, which should be validated after the summer break by the National Waste Committee (CND), has been criticised by insiders, however, for only setting a reduction target for household waste. This leaves out 90 per cent of the waste produced in France. In 2010, the total French waste production was 355 million tonnes (3 per cent more than in 2008), 329 million tonnes of which were the result of economic activities and therefore not produced by households. The building sector alone produced 260 million tonnes, some 73 per cent of the total.
