Council calls for tough air quality policy, but vetoes new legislation

Member states meeting in Dublin last week recognised that despite some degree of progress, air pollution is still a major problem in the EU. Indeed a number of countries have still not achieved the objectives laid down in existing legislation. Ministers therefore recognised the need for an ambitious EU policy on air quality and said they would back the new strategy that will be presented by the European Commission after the summer as long as it gave them a certain degree of flexibility.
