Despite a recent poll which found that most English consumers would support a move to charge for single use plastic bags, the UK government looks set to drop plans to introduce such a tax in England. Previously, ministers had said they were impressed by the result of a scheme in Wales intended to encourage consumers to use recyclable bags when shopping, in a bid to reduce plastic bag pollution. Wales has cut plastic bag use by 95 per cent since the charge was introduced in 2011. The same trend has happened in Ireland, which introduced its levy in 2002.
