Climate change - take action now, says Joint Research Centre

European governments must take urgent action on climate change or risk a costly future, according to a new study by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) released last week. "Acting now means sparing Europe from paying for damages estimated at a net loss of 1.8 per cent of Europe's gross domestic product (GDP)," the Commission said on 25 June. "The findings show that climate change could cost Europe more than €190 billion across different sectors while also leading to more severe and frequent weather extremes. This could be the case if nothing was done to prevent a temperature increase of 3.5°C, expected by the end of the century, under today's economic circumstances."
