Key to 2015 Climate Change Deal Rests On Joint 2014 Actions, U.N. Official Says

The world cannot wait until 2015 to start work in earnest on an international climate change agreement, the United Nations' top climate official said Oct. 21. "The time is now," Christiana Figueres, executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), said at the opening day of an Oct. 21-22 conference on climate change in London. "I don't exaggerate when I say that 2014 needs to be the year when every government, every business ... prepares the ground for a meaningful agreement," Figueres said at the event organized by the public policy research organization Chatham House. In her speech, Figueres outlined milestones in the period leading up to the 21st Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC in December 2015 in Paris. Countries at a climate summit in Doha, Qatar, at the end of 2012 committed to adopt a broad climate pact at that summit to give nations ample time to ratify the agreement so it can go into effect in 2020 (36 INER 46, 1/2/13).
