U.N. Officials Warn of Migration Pressures Caused by Changing Climate, Call for Action

The effects of climate change will cause huge movements of people within and across borders and will have major social and economic repercussions that governments have yet to fully grasp, officials with various U.N. agencies warned. Speaking Feb. 19 at a conference on climate change, environmental degradation, and migration officials from the United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM), the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said the effects of climate change on population movements is already evident and warrants immediate action.
