Consumers can get information from just about anywhere on the perceived risks associated with packaging materials - such as from bisphenol A (BPA) - but hearing from industry that the substance is safe will not help convince them, a conference heard last week. Dario Dainelli, director of regulatory affairs for Europe and Asia/Pacific for Sealed Air, suggested that industry groups lack credibility when it comes to explaining the safety of food packaging and contact materials to consumers. The industry is seen as telling consumers what they want to hear, regardless of the scientific evidence backing up what they say - for example, the several decades of research showing BPA is safe for use in food containers, he said.
