No EU-US harmonisation on chemicals and cars in TTIP

EU and US rules on chemicals and motor vehicles, including emissions, differ too widely to allow harmonisation, the European Commission said ahead of this week's fifth round of talks on a Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) between the two sides. The admission came in a 14 May statement where the EU outlined its negotiating positions in five areas - chemicals, motor vehicles (both cars and lorries), Pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and textiles and clothing. The statement, which included links to the full EU positions, explained that in each sector the papers focus on ways to: end the unnecessary duplication of product testing or plant inspections; recognise each other's existing regulations, or bring them more closely together; and, align respective procedures for approving or registering new products.
