Interior, Commerce Agencies Propose Policy To Clarify Eligibility of Species for Protection

The Interior and Commerce departments published a proposed policy Dec. 9 that they say will clarify which species or populations of species are eligible for protection under the Endangered Species Act (76 Fed. Red. 76,987). The proposed policy also would provide for earlier and more effective opportunities to conserve declining species, according to a statement from the Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Fisheries Service.
