Advocacy Groups Ask EPA to Address Flaws in State's Permit Enforcement

Austin, Texas-Two environmental groups asked the Environmental Protection Agency Dec. 14 to step in and issue a notice of deficiency to the Louisiana regulators for failure to enforce rules governing operating permits for major air polluters in the state. In a petition filed with EPA, the Environmental Integrity Project and the Louisiana Bucket Brigade alleged that the state Department of Environmental Quality failed to properly fund, monitor, and enforce permits issued under Title V of the Clean Air Act. In addition to requesting a notice of deficiency, the petition asked EPA to "take other appropriate measures."
