Obama Includes New Fee on Hardrock Mining In Plan for Economic Growth, Deficit Cuts

The White House is proposing a new fee to cover the cost of mine cleanups at abandoned hardrock mining sites, an element added to President Obama's Plan for Economic Growth and Deficit Reduction. The proposal repeats a part of the administration's budget request for fiscal year 2012. Congress did not accept the idea at that time, but now the plan will go to the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, rather than through the standard appropriations process.
