The Environmental Protection Agency should assess whether a federal program for cleaning up hazardous waste at industrial sites has the resources to meet its cleanup goals for 2020, and either reallocate resources or revise its goals, the Government Accountability Office said in a report released Aug. 25. At least 95 percent of industrial facilities that fall under the corrective action program are required to construct final cleanup remedies by 2020, but only slightly more than 25 percent have met the goal so far, according to the GAO report, Hazardous Waste: Early Goals Have Been Met in EPA's Corrective Action Program, but Resource and Technical Challenges Will Constrain Future Progress.
