Air Resources Board Sets New Limits On Sulfur in Fuel for Oceangoing Vessels

LOS ANGELES-The California Air Resources Board on June 23 amended the state's low-sulfur fuel standards for oceangoing vessels to more closely harmonize them with federal requirements, and particularly to adjust the state's offshore regulatory boundary to prevent ships from avoiding compliance with the standards. Approved by a unanimous vote at a meeting in Sacramento, the amendments update a regulation adopted in 2008 that applies to all domestic and foreign-flagged cargo ships, tankers, and cruise ships sailing within 24 miles of the state's coastline (39 ER 1555, 8/1/08).
