EPA Clarifies Requirements on Particles, Opacity in Final Rule on Steam Generators

The Environmental Protection Agency exempted some steam-generating units from a requirement to collect data on condensable particulate matter in a direct final rule published in the Federal Register Jan. 20 (76 Fed. Reg. 3517). The direct final rule amends EPA's new source performance standards for steam-generating units at power plants and other industrial facilities, which were issued in 2009, in response to challenges by a power plant trade group. It also clarifies when opacity monitoring is required at facilities that are not required to operate continuous opacity monitoring systems.
