Study Finds Ground Rubber Improves Asphalt Performance for Road Building

New research from the National Center for Asphalt Technology found ground rubber from used tires provided a high-performance, cost-effective alternative to oil-based polymers in asphalt production. The study, Effect of Ground Tire Rubber Particle Size and Grinding Method on Asphalt Binder Properties, concluded the manufacturing process of the ground rubber had no impact on its performance in asphalt applications. But the study, which was released Nov. 13, found the size and surface area of the ground rubber particles "had the most influence on increasing the critical high temperature grade of the modified binder."
