Prodn. of gilsonite-contg. bitumen used as high performance asphalt for road building

The prodn. of gilsonite-contg. bitumen prods. (I) comprises adding liq. bitumen at a temp. of at least 200 (pref. 200-210) deg C to liq. gilsonite with stirring. Pref. the gilsonite (G) is premelted at 200-210 deg C. The process comprises mixing part of the bitumen (B) to give an intermediate prod. (1) contg. 25-50% G and then mixing with more B at 200-210 deg C to give a prod. contg. not more than 15 (pref. 4-10) % G. Liq. B may also be mixed with a liq. plastic and/or rubber prod. (pref. a polymer) to give a second intermediate (2) contg. 33-50% polymer, which is then mixed with (1) at 150-200 deg C to give a prod. contg. not more than 6 (pref. 2-4) % polymer. The B is kept in a feed tank at 140-150 deg C and heated to the required mixing temp. in the lines to the mixers and/or in intermediate tanks. The G is placed in a feed tank in the form of granules and kept at 170-200 (pref. 180-200) deg C. The whole process is pref. carried out in a closed system in the absence of air.
