The boom in hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is one of a number of factors that puts an increasing strain on local water resources across the world, a Swedish researcher told Bloomberg BNA Sept. 5. Gustaf Olsson, a retired professor from Lund University whose work focused on automation and control applied to environmental, electrical power, and industrial systems, added that a lack of data is hindering research on alternative extraction techniques and the potential reuse of shale water. He spoke at the World Water Week conference, organized by the Stockholm International Water Institute, which runs through Sept. 6.
