Region 6 Failed to Record Wetland Spending, Used Money for Other Programs, OIG Charges

The Environmental Protection Agency's Region 6 failed to document labor costs related to a wetlands restoration program and used the funds for other water programs, meaning it may have to repay the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as much as $780,793, the EPA Office of Inspector General said in an Oct. 9 report. Congress passed the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act (CWPPRA) in 1990 to fund coastal wetlands restoration projects in Louisiana. The CWPPRA is financed by a transfer of small engine fuel tax funds from the Highway Trust Fund to the Sport Fish Restoration Account.
