DOE Says Efficiency Rules for Refrigerators, Freezers Will Save Businesses $11.7 Billion

New energy efficiency requirements for refrigerators, freezers and other commercial refrigeration equipment used in supermarkets and restaurants announced by the Energy Department Feb. 28 will save businesses $11.7 billion over 30 years, according to department estimates. The standards, in the form of a final rule that becomes effective in 2017, will make the average commercial refrigeration unit about 30 percent more efficient, compared to the current standards that were established in 2009, the department said. The department said the new requirements, which also will cut carbon pollution by the equivalent of 142 million metric tons over a 30-year period, apply to equipment that generally operates 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.
