DOE Proposes Tougher Efficiency Standards For Refrigerators, Freezers Starting in 2014

Energy use by new refrigerators and freezers would be reduced by up to 30 percent under proposed Department of Energy standards to be published in the Federal Register Sept. 27.rnThe minimum efficiency standards are in line with an Energy Efficient and Smart Appliance Agreement reached in July by energy efficiency advocates and appliance manufacturers. That agreement also recommended standards for clothes washers, clothes dryers, dishwashers, and air conditioners.rnThe proposed standards for refrigerators and freezers would go into effect in January 2014 and would apply to all such products manufactured or imported into the United States.
