Interior Drops Arctic Offshore Lease Sales, Rejects Requests for Extensions of Leases

The Interior Department is canceling lease sales for the Arctic offshore in 2016 and 2017 and is refusing the requests of two companies for lease extensions in those waters, the department said Oct. 16. Under the current five-year offshore leasing program, Chukchi Sea Lease Sale 237 was scheduled potentially for 2016. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management issued a call for information and project location nominations in 2013, in response to which industry submitted no specific nominations, Interior said.
