McCarthy Threatened With Subpoena Over Outstanding Document Requests

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) threatened to subpoena Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Gina McCarthy over what he called ignored requests for documents related to several ongoing congressional investigations. Smith, chairman of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee, sought all documents by June 22 and requested four senior officials be made available for transcribed interviews the week of June 29 in order to avoid compulsory action. "The agency's obstruction of legitimate congressional oversight by its continuing delays is particularly troubling given the agency's attempts to ram through an overwhelming number of regulations in the final two years of the Obama administration," Smith said in a June 15 letter. "It appears that EPA is engaging in an effort to obfuscate congressional oversight of these rules by delaying its production of key documents to the committee."
