National Priorities List Gets Two Sites; Six Proposed

Two new Superfund sites were added to the National Priorities List on March 24, and another six were proposed for the list. The Kokomo Contaminated Ground Water Plume in Kokomo, Ind., and a steel finishing plant, the DSC McLouth Steel Gibraltar Plant in Gibraltar, Mich., were added to the Environmental Protection Agency's list of most contaminated sites. The six sites proposed are Estech General Chemical Co., a pesticide manufacturer in Calumet City, Ill.; Colonial Creosote, a wood treatment plant in Bogalusa, La.; BJAT LLC, which conducts various industrial operations in Franklin, Mass.; Anaconda Aluminum Co. Columbia Falls Reduction Plant, an aluminum smelter in Columbia Falls, Mont.; the Main Street Ground Water Plume in Burnet, Texas; and the Grain Handling Facility at Freeman, in Freeman, Wash. For the two finalized sites, the EPA will try to identify the responsible parties and get them to conduct or pay for the cleanup of the contaminated sites. For the proposed sites, there will be a 60-day public comment period before a final listing decision.
