United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appears to have put a premium on experience in making two appointments to head the UN climate secretariat and the UN Environment Program this week, environmental and climate advocates said May 4. Patricia Espinosa, the former foreign minister of Mexico named executive secretary for the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, essentially will oversee talks to implement the global climate deal reached in Paris last December under her predecessor, Christiana Figueres. Figueres previously served as a diplomat from Costa Rica and was the first UNFCCC head tapped from a developing nation. Espinosa, who was key to resurrecting the climate negotiations when they were hosted in Can-cun in 2010, will be the second Latin American in a row to serve as the UN's top climate official.
