The best way to limit near-term climate change is to curb methane emissions, particularly from oil and gas operations, according to a report from the International Energy Agency on thepowerful greenhouse gas.The autonomous intergovernmental organization that was formed after the 1973 oil crisis made its clearest call yet for the fossil fuel industry to clean up fugitive leaks and intentionalreleases of methane, a gas that traps 84 times more heat than carbon dioxide over its first couple of decades in the atmosphere.Global fossil fuel operations emitted close to 120 million metric tons of methane last year, nearly one-third of all releases of the gas attributed to human activity, the IEA said.
